for their vent and drain system ...old home using the cast iron were quieter because the cast iron pipe had more mass/density and was therefore quieter. you can try and minimize the sound by adding/stuffing batt fiberglass insulation around the drain pipe but there really will not be much room between the pipe and the drywall since the pipe is probably 3 or 4 inches in diameter. if it that annoying you can give that a try or consider adding like a sheet of foam insulation board on the whole wall and then redrywall over that again..--this is pretty drastic a measure to fix a nuisance problem. good luck..LJ
