Septic tanks - leech fields

My neighbors have had to have their tanks drained due to overflow problems. One has never used Septic system treatments and the other has told me he used them faithfully. Both have used different people to pump their tanks. Both have been told that they should never use any kind of treatment for their tanks and instead should have them pumped out every three years.
I have been using Rid-X every month since we had our house built. Which was one year before the one neighbor and three years before the other.
Since our tank is buried and in front of our house, I prefer not to have an unsightly lid showing.
What I really want to know is should I be using the treatment system and do I have to dig up and put a collar on my septic tank and have it drained and how often.
