I want to refinish our kitchen cabinets. They appear to be oak that was stained a dark walnut (I think). We would like to go to one of the new white stains since we are trying to brighten up the kitchen. My two concerns are 1) that after stripping sanding and bleaching the wood is still going to have a dark hue to it that will show through the white stain and 2) the stains I see in the stores seem one dimensional compared to those used by cabinetmakers. Any ideas on the dark wood and is there another class of stain that the cabinetmakers use or possibly is it a multi-level technique?
