lift master garage opener

My opener has developed a problem. The door will go up with both the remote and fixed control button. But will no longer come down. It starts to come down, about 6 inches, then stops and goes back up. also the light in the main unit starts flashing. In order to close the door I have to hold my finger on the button until the door is all the way down. Can you help me.
