I have also had the same problem this weekend. This weekend rain water started to appear through the bricks above the damper. As far as I can tell it is coming from loose mortar on the outside, though a quick visual hasnt determined major damage. I believe I had heard a loud "pop" last weekend while using the fireplace during the cold weather and lots of snow perhaps water had frozen in between bricks and popped them open. Allowing water to seep thru. What kind of mortar is best for repointing or is there a type of caulking to use?? it is minor repair but the whole firbox needs repointing on the inside. I have a cap and have repair loose mortar on the top of the flu last year. I believe we are not the only ones that this has happened to this weekend.
