Hardwood Siding

Is there a certain type of special treatment, paint, or application process to insure a longer life to hardwood siding for your home. I am interested in purchasing a two yr. old existing home that has hardwood siding, and the paint is already chipping. Should I be concerned, or was the paint cheap, or improperly applied?
