It is really hard to answer this question without seeing how the fireplace is set up. Is this a masonry fireplace or built in? Is it on an outside wall? Is there an ash pit? There may well be a way to get outside combustion air in, but all we can do is discuss theory without more details. In most cases if outdoor combustion air was not provided for originally (code requirement most places) you will probably need professional assistance.
