Orange-brown stains (fungus?) on basement walls Posted by Larry Fox on July 7th, 1999 11:40 PM

OK, here's the situation: We're remodeling the basement in our old, 80 year old house. The basement has seen seepage over the years, the walls are bowed, the mortar was in poor condition. We've regraded the foundation on all sides to keep the water out, tuck pointed the mortar joints, then cleaned and DryLok'ed the walls. After applying the DryLok, orange-brown stains appeared on the walls (fungus?), as well as dark grey stains (mildew, I believe). So, we then applied a coat of the latex-based Kils Premier stain blocker with an added mildewcide (just for good measure), which appeared to solve the mildew problem. However, we're still getting the orange-brown stains leaking through the stain blocker on the lower blocks of the foundation. What are the orange-brown stains? And, would using an oil based stain blocker like the regular Kilz or Loc-Tite from MAB have been a better solution than the latex Kilz Premier? Thanks!
