Jack, how about a spiral staircase leading to the mezzanine? What ever you decide, you will have to pull a permit and you should have the cantilever design checked by either an architect or an architect who will pass it on to a structural engineer. You may think that this may not be important, but you just might have some problems selling or insuring a house with a room and no way to get to it.
