A laminate product or a solid oak or ash or? If it is a solid product, you certainly don't need any additional support. Run the flooring perpendicular to the floor joists and make sure you nail as often as you can into the joists.
I use red rosin paper between the subfloor and the hardwood, but tarpaper will work as well.
