The 3/8 underlayment would provide 1-3/32 total floor thickness and would eliminate deflections that might result from the parallel installation. This seems to conform to the preferred flooring thicknesses specified by the manufacturers. I think that being conservative by adding the underlayment is a good idea. Your additional work in preparation will certainly provide a floor that will provide a lifetime of worry-free service.
