Is there any access for outdoor animals to get into the attic?.......sounds like a (?)pest has wet in the attic on/in the ductwork.......Does the smell come and go with humidity changes?...

Here's an interresting site on odor control......these people sell products that treat a number of persistant odors including Urine and "death smells".......(and other pest problems)
