This is a really big house - almost 5000 sq ft - so I assume that they can get into the attic in a number of places. We thought about that as a possiblity - that some of the local fox squirrels were urinating in the attic. It does seem to come and go with humidity changes.

We also had heard about drain pans of a/c units having traps to collect water from the indoor blower coil and that if it evaporates, it could give off a horrible smell. However, I am not sure where the indoor blower coil would be. We do have 2 units (heat pump)...
