Advice please - problem with gravel driveway

Please help. We had a driveway (part concrete, part tarmac). I got in 30 tonnes of gravel and spead it all by shovel (nearly killed me). The first time I drove over it with the car I nearly go stuck as I could get no traction and formed huges troughs all over the driveway, as the wheels sank in. What can I do to 'firm' it up? Spread a dry mix of sand/cement and hose it down and hope it sets and holds the gravel in place?
Please help I am desperate - It looks great util we try to drive on it?
