Types of Pool Skimmers

There are two main categories of pool skimmers: manual and automatic. Choosing the type that is most appropriate will depend on both the type of pool (above-ground or inground) and how much daily effort the pool owner wants to put in. 

Manual and automatic pool skimmers vary in cost and complexity. In the following sections, we look at each of these aspects in more detail.

Manual 

The simplest manual pool skimmer is essentially a shallow net attached to a pole. The main advantage of manual pool skimmers is price. These are the low-budget solutions, and they do a perfectly good job of fishing a few leaves out of the water. 

If they have drawbacks, it’s that they often can’t pick up very much, they may not be especially durable, and they always require physical effort. Lifting a net containing 20 or 30 pounds of wet leaves while leaning over a pool is not easy. 

There are some manual skimmers that are larger and stronger than others. There are also pool maintenance kits that have skimmer heads and attachments for other pool-cleaning tasks. 

Automatic

Automatic pool skimmers come in three formats: stationary, floating, and robotic. 

Stationary pool skimmers are fitted to the side of above-ground pools, and they are connected to the water pump/circulation system. Leaves and other debris fall into a skimmer basket on the outside of the pool or hooked to the inside rail so it is easy to empty.

Floating pool skimmers are designed to be attached to pool vacuums. While the vacuum cleans the bottom of the pool, the floating skimmer creates a whirlpool that draws in material from the surface.

Robotic pool skimmers run independently of the pool pump, and they swim across the surface, picking up floating waste as they go. A pool robot skimmer is usually a cordless, solar-powered device. While the initial investment is higher, there are no ongoing costs, and they are often environmentally friendly.

How We Tested the Best Pool Skimmers

To find the best pool skimmers across different styles and price points, we evaluated more than two dozen models from top manufacturers, including both manual and automatic options. Each product was tested for ease of use, durability, build quality, debris collection performance, and overall value. For robotic and automatic models, we also considered setup time, navigation, battery life (or solar performance), and how well they integrated with existing pool systems. For manual skimmers, we focused on net depth, mesh quality, frame sturdiness, and comfort during use.

We used each skimmer in a real backyard pool in Florida, rating each based on how effectively it removed leaves, bugs, and fine debris. We also factored in price, expected longevity, and customer support where applicable. What to Consider When Choosing a Pool Skimmer

Before deciding on either a manual or automatic pool skimmer as a go-to pool tool, it’s good to be familiar with several other features that are frequently considered. It’s worth taking a few minutes to think about these factors, as they impact initial cost and how the pool skimmer will be used on a day-to-day basis.

Pool Type

The type of pool that needs to be cleaned will help determine which type of skimmer to purchase. Some skimmers can be used in virtually any pool, but choosing the wrong kind could damage or destroy the pool.

Above-ground pools can be cleaned with manual pool skimmers, though it can sometimes be awkward to reach all the way around a larger pool with a net. Standing on a movable step or platform will get the job done (just make sure it’s stable!). Alternatively, purchasing a longer telescopic pole can make a manual skimmer easier to use. 

Stationary pool skimmers are described as suitable for above-ground pools, but it’s important to check installation requirements. Some hang or clamp a pool filter basket on the edge, while others require a hole to be cut into the side of the pool for installation. 

Robotic pool skimmers work well in above-ground pools as well. While floating pool skimmers can work in above-ground pools, these skimmers need to work with a pool vacuum, and some robotic vacuums can damage soft-sided pools, so check the pool instructions before using these tools. 

Inground pools can be cleaned with manual skimmers, robotic skimmers, and floating skimmers, but stationary pool skimmers are not suitable for inground pools. Most inground pools have built-in skimmer inlets connected to the pool’s pump and filter, but there’s no edge to use to connect an add-on stationary skimmer. 

Maintenance and Ease of Use

The majority of pool skimmers are easy to look after and require minimal maintenance. However, overlooking maintenance will usually reduce the tool’s effectiveness and shorten its useful life, so it’s worth considering basic upkeep.

With manual pool skimmers, it’s really just a question of emptying the net. The contents can usually be added to the compost heap. Because manual skimmers are very low cost, though, they are often neglected. If left lying on the lawn, someone may eventually step on it, or moisture might get into any metal parts and cause rust. Simply standing it against a wall under cover will prevent most problems.

Stationary pool skimmers are mostly made from strong plastic and, beyond emptying the basket and occasionally wiping it with a damp cloth, they are usually maintenance-free. Floating pool skimmers collect waste in the attached vacuum, requiring minimal maintenance of their own. 

Robotic skimmers have an internal collecting tray that needs to be emptied. Solar panels are less effective if dusty, so wiping them off regularly will make them more effective.
