Excellent performance and durability, a well-curated selection of sizes compatible with various drill types, and a reasonable price tag make DeWalt’s 45-piece screwdriver bit set a great option for most DIYers.

Don’t be fooled by this kit’s compact size. Even at just under 9 inches long by 9 inches wide, this durable organization and storage case houses a lot of functionality with a total of 45 drill bits, as well as four Phillips-head and three flathead power bits. The bits are magnetic to make it easier to set and retain screws, and the set also comes with a magnetic drive guide and two nut drivers. The kit does lack any hex bits and includes just four Torx sizes, which limits its functionality for automotive work.

With its titanium nitride-coated torsion construction and precision-cut heads, DeWalt’s 45-piece kit performed well during testing. We were able to drive in fasteners at high speeds and torque without stripping screw heads. Each bit holder also gripped the insert bits securely, preventing them from pulling off or sticking in the screw head.

Along with its performance, we also loved the compact size of this kit, which we found easy to throw in a tool bucket or bag. While it may not have the vast variety of bits that home auto mechanics need, it’s ideal for carpenters in search of a quality screwdriver bit set.

What our tester says: “DeWalt’s kit includes the bits you’ll use most, along with a few nice-to-haves. Thanks to that, the kit is compact enough to throw in a tool box. I found it very useful for most DIY jobs.”—Tony Carrick, Product Reviews tester and writer

This 47-piece set of steel screwdriver drill bits from Bosch is built from high-quality S2 high-carbon steel for durability, making it ideal for professionals and DIYers alike.

The bits range in size and function, with various drill bits, including magnetic nutsetters (for aid in driving fasteners), a finder driver, and power bits designed specifically for power tools. The bits accommodate various types of screwdrivers, including flathead, square, Torx, Allen, and  Phillips-head.

Bosch has long had a reputation for making good-quality screwdriver bits, and this kit is a great example of that quality. The precision-cut tips fit screw slots snugly, which allowed us to drive in longer screws at high torques and speeds. Bosch’s 47-piece kit is also compact. The plastic case, which measures approximately 9 inches long by 8.5 inches wide, makes this collection easy to store, organize, and transport.

While we appreciate its portability, it does come at the cost of bit variety. The kit comes with a broad range of  Phillips-head screwdriver bits, but there are only three Torx bit sizes.

This set may not have the durability of premium sets with torsional screwdriver bits, but it also costs a fraction of those kits. Overall, it’s a great budget-priced option that will handle most DIYers’ demands.

Makita’s 60-piece impact driver bit set provides all the benefits and durability that come with torsion screwdriver bits, so users can take on tougher jobs. The kit includes 10 power drill bits, including several Phillips-head sizes along with a square bit and three different sizes of Torx bits. There’s also a bit holder with various sizes of insert bits in  Phillips-head, Torx, flathead, square, and hex ranging from tiny to larger sizes.

What set Makita’s bit driver apart from the competition was the impressive performance of its Impact XPS technology. While we were able to drive 3-inch wood screws into soft pine 2x4s with all of the bits we tested, Makita trumped much of the competition in terms of speed. The torquing action of these bits allowed us to go full throttle from start to finish without having to worry about the bit popping out and stripping the screw head. No matter how fast we went with our impact driver, the bits stayed stubbornly locked into the screw head.

We aren’t a fan of most bit holders as bits tend to pull out of them under high torque. Makita’s is an exception. The bit holder is deep, securely locking in each bit. We didn’t lose one bit, even when working under high torque and speed.

Along with a full complement of insert bits and power bits, this kit also comes with a ¼-inch nut setter and a socket adapter. The top-notch performance of this screwdriver bit set makes it well suited for pros and serious DIYers alike.

What our tester says: “These torsional bits offer impressive performance at a price most DIYers won’t mind paying.”—Tony Carrick, Product Reviews tester and writer

Milwaukee’s Shockwave set offers a diverse range of bits capable of handling high-torque applications. It includes three bit holders and a broad range of bit types, including various sizes of  Phillips-head, Torx, square, hex and flathead insert bits.

Unlike other bit holders we’ve tested that tend to separate easily from bits, these holders grip the bits tightly, allowing for excellent torque transfer while preventing the bits from sticking in the screw heads. In fact, it holds them so tightly that we found it difficult to remove smaller bits from the holders.

The kit also comes with ¼-inch, 5/16-inch, and ⅜-inch magnetic bit holders and three socket adapters, making it an ideal choice for automotive work.

As for performance, Milwaukee’s Shockwave bits live up to their billing. They stay locked to the screw head even when working at high speeds and high torque, minimizing the odds of stripping out a screw head or breaking a bit. And thanks to their titanium coating and laser-hardened tips, we’d expect these bits to last a long time. We just wish that Milwaukee included a few power bits in this kit. Still, for users looking for a pro-tier screwdriver bit set, this is the one.

DeWalt’s expansive 100-piece set pairs a broad collection of screwdriver bits with twist drill bits. Its screwdriver bits are extensive, including Torx and  Phillips-head torsion power bits in both standard length and extended lengths for reaching recessed screws. There’s also a bit holder and a variety of insert bits that add square head and flathead shapes. And since the kit comes with numerous spares, there are plenty of backups as the bits wear out.

Along with screwdriver bits, the kit includes 5/16-inch and ¼-inch nut setters and a ⅜-inch adapter for impact sockets. DeWalt also throws in 14 twist drill bits, an especially useful addition for carpenters.

DeWalt’s Flextorq torsion screwdriver bits had the smallest profile of any screwdriver bits we tested. Don’t be fooled by their small size, though: they were among the top performers, driving in fasteners quickly and with very little vibration transferred to our impact driver, even when cranking up the speed and torque.

While all the screwdriver bit sets we tested come in hard plastic carrying cases, DeWalt’s case was among the best designed. All the bits fit nicely into their spots, and we really liked that there are separate removable containers for insert bits that are small enough to fit in a tool belt. With its broad variety of bits and top-notch performance, this is an ideal kit for pros or serious DIYers.

How We Chose and Tested the Best Screwdriver Bit Sets

Products tested 6
Time spent testing 3 hours
Tests performed4
Price range$18 to $45

The best screwdriver bit sets come with a wide variety of sizes and head types, are made of durable materials to withstand the job at hand, and come with a durable carrying case that keeps the bits organized. Our research helped us identify nine top screwdriver bit sets. We considered material, build quality, and selection of bits when making these selections.

After selecting our finalists, we put six of the nine through intensive testing. We used each bit set with an impact driver that produces a high amount of torque. We started by driving 3-inch screws into two stacked pine 2x4s, gradually increasing the speed and torque with each fastener to determine how well each bit remained in the screw slot under increased speed and torsional forces. We tested Torx-, Phillips-, and square-head power bits and insert bits with bit holders. We also assessed each bit before and after testing to evaluate wear. Finally, we considered the size, durability, and performance of each set, comparing these against the price to determine value.

What to Consider When Choosing a Screwdriver Bit Set

When choosing a screwdriver bit set, it’s important to consider what type of bits the set includes, along with bit head type, shank type, and material. To determine which set is right for you, be sure to focus on the type of work you’ll be doing and choosing the best bit set for the job.

Screwdriver Bit Head Type

Screwdriver bit heads come in six basic shapes. Most bit sets typically include four or five of these screwdriver types

 Phillips-head

This type of screwdriver has a cross-shaped tip with a pointed end that fits snugly into cross-shaped slots in Phillips-head screws. This design allows them to create more torque than a flathead screwdriver.

Flathead/Slotted

These types of bits have a flat tip that fits slotted screws. While flathead screws have been largely replaced by other types of screws, they are still in use where aesthetics are important, such as with switch plate covers and furniture.

Torx

This type of bit is characterized by the six points that give it its star shape. This design makes Torx bits much less likely to slip out of the screw head under high torque, hence the name. They’re often used for decks, in automotive work, and in electronics repair.

Hex/Allen

As their name suggests, hex bits have six sides and are used for fasteners with hexagonal shaped slots, such as the screws often found on pre-fab furniture, in cars, bikes, and electronics. They are also commonly referred to as Allen wrenches.

Square/Robertson

These square-shaped bits fit screws with square-shaped slots. Unlike Phillips-head screws that can pop out or strip when they reach a certain amount of torque, square bit heads are designed to stay firmly in the screw head, making them best equipped for driving long fasteners into denser wood.

Pozidriv screwdriver

Pozidriv bits look very similar to Phillips-head bits, but their minor differences distinguish them. Whereas a Phillips-head bit has four points, a Pozidriv screwdriver actually has eight. These additional points of contact allow the bit to create more torque without camming out of the screw slot.

Shank Type and Bit Type

Nearly all screwdriver bits designed to work with drill/drivers and impact drivers have a six-sided hexagonal-shaped shank that fits into a cordless screwdriver or drill’s chuck. Those planning on using the bit with an impact driver should make sure the power bits and bit holders have a recessed ring close to the end of the shank that allows them to lock into the impact driver’s chuck.

Typically, screwdriver bit sets include both insert bits and power bits. Power bits include both the bit head and the shank in a single piece that is directly inserted into the drill or impact driver. Insert bits consist of the head with a much shorter shank. This type of bit inserts into a bit holder, which in turn is inserted into the drill or driver chuck. While insert bits are more economical, power bits tend to perform better as they don’t have to transfer power over two separate pieces.

Material

Screwdriver bits are typically made from two different types of steel alloy: S2 high-carbon steel and high-torque steel.

S2 High carbon steel

This type of steel is an alloy that often includes molybdenum, chromium, and vanadium. It has a high carbon content that makes it capable of withstanding high impacts, which is why it’s often used to make drill bits and other tools.

High torque steel

High torque steel bits have a torsion zone made from a steel alloy that’s capable of flexing or twisting under stress. This allows the bit to absorb spikes in torque, making it far less likely to break under impact than standard steel bits. This torquing action also makes the bit less susceptible to slipping out of the screw slot and stripping the screw head.

Intended Use and Bit Size Range

Having some idea of how you plan to use a bit driver set when shopping for one can help decide which is the best match. If the majority of the projects are carpentry-related, then a kit with a broad range of Phillips-head bits along with a mix of flathead and square drive bits is ideal. Bits that are capable of driving bolts are also useful.

For automotive work, look for a bit set that offers a broad range of Torx, hex, and Phillips-head bits, which are the most common screw types used on cars. A bit set that includes socket adapters and magnetic nut setters is also useful when working with cars and trucks.

To work on electronics, look for bits that come with Phllips, hex and torque bits that are small enough to fit the tiny screws typically found on computers and other electronics.

Additional Features

Most bit sets come with carrying cases that have individual spots for each piece in the kit. These cases prevent bits from getting lost while making it easy to find the size and type of bit needed for the job. Some kits include bits or bit holders that are magnetized. This is helpful for holding screws in place on the tip when starting them or when removing them, minimizing dropped and lost screws.

FAQs

Still have some lingering inquiries about the best screwdriver bit sets? Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions to help choose the right bit set for your professional or home projects.

Q. How do you choose a screwdriver bit?

As mentioned in our What to Consider section, choosing a screwdriver bit should depend entirely on its intended use. Determine the screw head type, the desired circumference and depth, and the material being used before selecting a drill bit set. One other thing to consider is whether the material of the drill bit can be sharpened for long-term reliability.

Q. Are screwdriver bits universal?

Most screwdriver bits are ¼ inch in size, and cordless drill heads adjust to accommodate drill bits in a variety of sizes. Handheld and electric screwdriver sets also accommodate bits of this size. However, drill bits do come in varying lengths to get into hard-to-reach areas.

Q. Can you use a screwdriver bit in a drill?

Most screwdriver bits on the market are designed to withstand the pressure of use in a power drill, but always consult a product’s packaging and manufacturer’s recommendations before proceeding.
