After reading mixed reviews on seemingly all caulk removal products, I wasn't overly optimistic about how well this would work on a thick, wide chunk of caulk that was so new, yet fully cured. Within about 15 minutes it cleaned up thin smears of caulk that I hadn't adequately wiped off the tub, which had turned into these blackish, brown, nauseating spots. Within a couple hours I was able to get my painting knife edge under the caulk all the way back to the lip of the (streel and ceramic-coated) tub. (Note someone else's complaint that it destroyed her new fiberglass or other composite tub, I can't speak to this but it wouldn't surprise me.)
I started this Friday night, and expected that by Saturday evening I'd still be trying to get the bulk of the old caulk out, yet it's 5am and I expect to have the bulk of the old caulk out by noon. As my only shower, if put this project off for at least the past 2 or 3 years. I would have done it sooner had I known about this product.
It goes on as a fairly thick gel (be careful opening the first time, mine had built pressure from the warm summer air, it squirted a little and I was glad it didn't get my eye) that smells surprisingly pleasant for the pretty aggressive chemical composition I imagine it must be. So far I haven't noticed any bad smells or irritating vapors but I'd ventilate well, regardless.
I did use my bare finger and washed it off without why skin irritation, but later I found my painter's tool to do a better job of pushing fresh gel under the loosened edges and leaving a nice thick coat on the surface - so far my plastic tub surround with a thin decorative film on the surface hasn't been damaged although a razor blade did cut some off on my prior attempts.
Bottom line: I wouldn't try to remove caulk, new or old, without this stuff in the future. Worth every penny. The best anology that comes to mind at 5am is that if this were a sewing project, I started out trying to make elaborate formal wear, and this stuff turned it into sewing a button on, saving me countless hours and lots of swearing.
It will always be my first choice from now on. Very easy to use, just spread it on the old caulking. I let it set for 2-3 hours, then scraped it off first time! Hooray! One spot was so bad I had to treat it twice and leave it for 4 hours to remove completely, but it worked!
And no bad smell...in fact - no smell at all. How do they do that? Good product, worth every penny.
This stuff also helped me remove a kitchen sink that had been very enthusiastically attached to a laminate countertop with a death grip’s worth of silicone.
Bonus that it doesn’t even smell strongly of chemicals, so it’s easy to use inside on a cold day.
