Pros:sharp blade, handle long enough to be comfortable using, durable
Cons: it’s just small, so takes longer to cover a lot of area.
We are removing old flooring, and underneath it all is concrete. The concrete is covered in tar paper glued down with tar. It’s been a nightmare, the tar is thick and so hard to scrape up! These scrapers have done an excellent job!! After being frustrated with other brands and types of scrapers we really lucked up with these! Plus the blades are replaceable with universal blades!
The small cost is well worth it, they handle the really tough jobs.
This review is for the 4ft 4" #693 long-handled scraper.
1st please understand that:
a) I very rarely give 5star reviews unless I'm totally 'in love' with a product. If I could I'd give this item 4.5/5 stars.
b) I never give reviews without trying the product first. I wish others would do the same.
c) I'm using this tool to scrape paint off walls and texture off ceilings. More precisely I'm scraping paint off 100+yr old lath&plaster walls (you know, the good stuff!). Until finding this item it was an exercise in utter frustration that had me in a deep funk due to the difficulty.
REVIEW:
This scraper is excellent. The included blade is sharp and pretty durable for a consumable item. The handle is sturdy and made of decent tube-steel. The tube steel is a little thin but definitely strong enough to perform the tasks that this tool is intended for (scraping paint/glue, lifting off vinyl sheet flooring or vinyl tiles - that sort of thing).
The head is made of pot metal but not the ultra-cheap kind. The slightly angled head is beneficial to getting an edge under the material you're trying to scrape and reducing stress on the wrists when actually scraping along the surface.
The blade slot is pretty tight (see last picture), and does NOT have some proprietary notch (see 4th picture) that prevents you from using 3rd-party blades from another vendor. This is, to me, a definite plus and in my opinion tells me that the company cares enough about the customer that they refuse to 'lock them in' to a repetitive sales loop by forcing them to buy their specific brand blades. Thank you very much for that, Warner, it is much appreciated.
The blade that came with the unit is VERY sharp. Be careful with it or you'll end up needing stitches. Try to set the unit upright against a wall (gently!) because if you set it blade-side-down you will definitely cut into your flooring. I've used the scraper for a couple hours now and it hasn't dulled too much - and I am scraping against plaster! Real lime plaster not the gypsum crap most people are used to. Real lime plaster, fwiw, is literally hard as a rock (limestone to be specific) so you know I'm not inflating the truth here.
The handle is a hard rubber. This is great for durability and not having to worry about tossing it in the back of your work truck but it's not so easy on the hands. Really the only gripe here would be if they could put a little bit softer rubber handle on it (like I have on my outdoor shovel/spade) and add a second grip half-way down the shaft so I could get a good purchase when I'm scraping the ceiling or fighting against a tough spot. This isn't much of a negative though, just something that would really set this item over the top and make it more awesome.
In the end I'm going to be purchasing the small-handled unit (4" #691). So that should tell you something - I am impressed enough with this unit that I am willing to give this seller/company more of my business and make another purchase from them.
Before I bought this item I was at my wit's end desperately trying to find a reasonable way to get the old paint off the walls of my 100+ year old house. I had tried sanding (omg that's a joke), using those 'fancy' paint-removal discs (works but $$$, time, and oh-so-heavy), and using a 'safe' paint stripper (sooo expensive!) and your 'regular scrapers' you find at your local big-box stores (what a joke!) - but none of these were really getting the job done. When I did my due diligence (as in, web searching for several hours) I discovered that the Brits use carbide scrapers most of the time. Searching for such things lead me to this item. It has (so far, and tbh it's only been a few hours) performed admirably. It's not a 'magic tool' - it takes effort and I need to pay attention, take my time, and take some breaks - but it works better than anything else I've tried and is a much more affordable option, just needs some good ol' fashioned 'elbow grease'.
