Thompson's water seal is good stuff that I've used before and like... but I think they are having an issue with the colors.
I bought semi-transparent chestnut brown. I wanted to re-apply to some decking, and the stuff I used previously was the brown. As soon as I poured some of it into a pan so I could start to apply it, I thought "man that looks pink", but I thought maybe it would look less pink/red once applied. But from the first board I brushed, it still looked kind of like red-clay. Like almost clay pottery-ish red. I stopped after a few boards, and after it dried it looked kind of redwood red. Not bad looking per se, but not the color I wanted. Then when just I looked online, it sure looks like what I received was actually Sedona Red. The label on the can I got says chestnut brown (like I ordered), but there is no way that is what is in the can. So now I guess I'll go by a physical store and see if they have it, but I'm going to shake it and then open the can in the parking lot and pour a tiny bit in a cup and make sure it's brown and not red. If it's red, I'm taking it back in.
I don't know what I'll do with this gallon of red sealer. I used some of it to seal a few boards on a trailer, where I don't care that they look like redwood, but overall this was a wasted purchase because they must have somehow put the wrong label on the can. So beware if you buy the semi-transparent chestnut brown variant in early 2023. You should be prepared to potentially get semi-transparent Sedona Red.
Update 3 weeks later: So I went and bought a gallon of the same chestnut brown color at a big box home improvement warehouse, and it is the same. So maybe this is just what the color looks like. I ended up using it, and although it's more red than I wanted, it doesn't look bad. I still think that the picture on the label (both in person and on the computer screen) looks less red than the stuff actually is. I also did some digging and the stuff I used previously was the oil in a color called "pinecone". They used to call it deck oil, but apparently they changed the name and now they call it timber oil and also changed the names of the colors. I definitely prefer the look of the oil to these water-based formulations. Anyway, it's not bad stuff, I'm sure it will extend the life of my fence, but it's more red than I think the label implies, and going forward I'm going to ensure I get the oil in a medium brown, not the water-based.
