Ever walk into one of the rooms in your house and get caught off guard by the unpleasant stench? Sometimes simple daily routines can trigger such odors. From letting damp towels fester in the washing machine to ignoring the science experiment brewing inside your garbage disposal, innocent habits can quickly turn a cozy home into a place you no longer want to be without a face mask.

Before you open every window in your house or drown every room in air freshener, it’s important to determine the odor’s source. Here are some of the most common mistakes that could cause a variety of house smells and how to prevent them from returning.

## Forgetting to Take Out the Trash

This might seem obvious, but when life gets hectic, we can often forget to remove the [trash from the kitchen](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-kitchen-trash-can/>) or other rooms into the garage or outside storage area. Odors from onion skins, pieces of chopped garlic, or that plastic wrap from frozen fish or meat can quickly sneak up on you the next day if the trash isn’t taken out. Always keep the lid on, replace garbage bags, and [clean your bins](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/trash-can-sizes/>) to ensure your trash doesn’t spoil the smell of your entire home.

## Vacuuming With a Full Vacuum Bag

Ironically, a vacuum cleaner—a [tool that keeps your home clean](<https://www.bobvila.com/interior/how-to-clean-cleaning-tools/>)—can also cause an off-putting smell. If your vacuum is dirty and filled with dust, hair, and crumbs that build up inside and get caught in the brush or bin, the mess can rot over time. Then, when you run the vacuum, it releases a smell that can spread all over your house. Avoid this situation by [emptying your vacuum cleaner](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-a-vacuum/>) after every time you use it, cleaning the filter, and examining the rollers for trapped debris.

## Letting Wet Clothes and Towels Sit

Moist clothes and towels, whether [left in the washing machine](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/washing-machine-smells/>) or bunched up in a ball on the floor, can create a damp, sour smell. They can also grow mold, [mildew](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-get-rid-of-mildew-smell/>), and bacteria if they sit for too long. Avoid keeping wet items in the washing machine; move them to the dryer in a timely fashion (within a couple of hours). Make sure towels brought into the house or just washed are completely dry before hanging them up in your bathroom, and hang all used towels so they get some air flow. It might also be helpful to open the window in your bathroom or turn on the vent fan to keep the air fresh.

## Not Cleaning Sink Drains or the Garbage Disposal

If your kitchen smells poorly and it’s not the trash, then check your garbage disposal and sink drain. Leftover food particles and soap residue often get stuck down in these areas or on the blades where bacteria can develop and produce a foul smell. To prevent odors, [clean your garbage disposal](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-a-garbage-disposal/>) and kitchen sink weekly by first dumping a pot of boiling water down the drain and then adding a cup of baking soda, followed by a cup of white distilled vinegar. Place a rag over the drain and let the solution fizz for 10 minutes before adding a second pot of building water.

## Neglecting Houseplants and Flower Bouquets

Those beautiful houseplants and flower bouquets brightening up your space could be the cause of house smells. If you neglect to care for your plants or let flowers stay on the counter too long, you might start to notice a stench coming from them. If houseplant soil stays wet constantly or the pot doesn’t drain properly, [roots can rot](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/what-does-root-rot-look-like/>). This produces a musty, earthy odor that is hard to eliminate.

Avoid overwatering your houseplants, make sure water is draining from the pot, and smell the soil for hints that something might be wrong. [Change flower bouquet water daily](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-keep-cut-flowers-fresh/>), use flower food, and realize that they don’t last much longer than about 2 weeks. Once they start to wilt, throw them away, compost them, or dry the petals and leaves for a future art project.

## Skipping Regular Carpet and Rug Maintenance

Dirty, dusty rugs and wall-to-wall carpet are often the source of a home’s odor. The fabrics are known to harbor odors from pet fur and dander, food crumbs, spills, dead skin cells, and standing water. Just vacuuming doesn’t always do the trick, so be sure to also deep-clean your carpet and rugs with a [deodorizing shampoo](<https://www.bobvila.com/reviews/best-odor-eliminators-2025/>) once a year.

## Cooking Without the Hood Fan

If you neglect to [turn on your range hood fan](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-use-range-hoods/>) when cooking on the stove, you might get stuck with some smelly air while you are trying to enjoy your meal. Cooking foods like eggs and stir fries, for example, is known to produce lingering smells if there isn’t proper ventilation in the kitchen. Over time, these various smells from steam, grease, and smoke can linger on nearby surfaces like cabinets, window treatments, cushions, and table linens. No matter what you are cooking, always remember to run the hood fan to [keep the air fresh](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-get-rid-of-odors-in-house/>).

## Reusing Sponges or Dishcloths

One of the worst smells originating in the kitchen comes from sponges and dishcloths that are left to sit for weeks or months without cleaning and replacing them. As the sponges or rags remain damp, bacteria can quickly grow on them. This then leads to a sour smell, which can end up on your hands, dishes, and sink. Because these items are used constantly, people often don’t realize they need to [keep them clean](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-a-sponge/>) for their home to retain its freshness. Change dishcloths daily and wash them regularly on a hot cycle. And remember to replace sponges regularly and dry them out fully between uses.

## Failing to Control Humidity Levels

[Excess humidity](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/humidity-level-at-home/>) often leads to mold and mildew, leaving your home with a musty odor. This tends to be more common during the summer months, especially in areas like the basement. [Poor ventilation](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/why-is-my-house-so-humid/>), local climate, and an aging or struggling AC unit are among the top culprits behind fluctuating humidity. If left unmanaged, those damp conditions will make problem rooms smell stale.
