One year ago, my husband and I bought our first house: a 1929 colonial with good bones. Before we had even closed on the purchase, I already had my project list—and our top priority was refreshing its outdated (albeit spacious) kitchen. The butter yellow walls, oak beadboard cabinets, terra cotta backsplash with floral accent tiles, speckled beige laminate countertops, and sheet vinyl floor in rosy brick basketweave were neither original nor modern but still showed potential.

A “slow renovation” was born out of necessity: After purchasing the house, we weren’t ready to invest in a total remodel. And as the editor-in-chief of a home improvement site, I knew DIY updates could make a large impact anyway. Nine months later, I’ve painted the walls, refinished the cabinets, retrofitted cabinets next to the sink to hook up a dishwasher, and added a freestanding hutch for display storage. And I’ve had plenty of time to think about what to add next and to wait for a sale.

Now between Amazon’s Prime Day, Target’s Circle Week, Wayfair’s extended Way Day sales, and ongoing appliance sales at The Home Depot and Lowe’s, this is the best time to shop for a kitchen renovation. (And timely, too, because October is Kitchen and Bath Month.)
