Someone told me that there is some type of item that you can lay in the rain spout that will heat the water so that ice dams will not form. You just plug this item in during the winter months. Does anyone know what this item is and is it more effecient than putting up a barrier? Thanks

called a heaat tape, occasionally effective. better to treatthe problem instead.

If you have ice dams it is from inadequate ventilation and/or insulation

What should I do. I know I have very thick walls. they are like 1 1/2 inch thick. Please guide me so I can get this done. Do I have to put up new walls that are thinner.

I know in the attic I need more insulation. But what do I do about the very thick walls. Is this an issue? I am just at a loss here. I did put in a ridge vent on the roof to give it more ventilation. My brother said the house is tight. No husband at home so I have to do this on my own. Thanks for your guidance. I think moisture gets in the walls but I dont know.
