I have an open beam ceiling of 2x6 tongue-in-groove wood laid on an upper and lower beam. There is no insulation.

I want to replace the pitch & gravel covering with an insulating underlayment with shingles on top. 1.Where can I purchase an insulating sheet or board and 2. what type of shingle is recommended. The house is 45 years old and I live in Los Angeles.

Use the pink styrofoam in 2"thickness or two layers of 1 inch(r5) thickness..Cover this with 1/2" plywood and attach to roof rafters with screws..Then depending on pitch.....regular shingles on top of roofing felt or rolled roofing..

Like I said,.....it matters !!

Do not apply plywood, and then roofing over foamboard without building up each rafter the same hight and filling in the spaces with the foamboard. All will be lost cuz you`ll be in the past !!
