We recently moved into our current house, well...come to find out the front yard is full of rocks! We are talking at least 6 inches of rock. We have been trying to dig them up. Does anyone have any advice here? Are we okay leaving them in and topping the entire front yard with 6 - 12 inches of new dirt? I appreciate any and all feed back you(s) may have.

Thanking you in advance,
Evie

Well, around here in New England, there's many a farmers tale about "growing" rocks in his fields. And many a local resident can attest to rocks appearing in the lawn where none used to be. They actually don't "grow", but they do appear seemingly out of nowhere when the normal freeze/thaw cycles of winter-time do the ol' push-pull thing on whatever is within the upper regions of frozen ground. The freeze/thaw cycle will push rocks to the surface over time, and in some years it will appear that whole crops have appeared once spring arrives.

If you can scrape out the upper layer where most of the larger rocks reside, you might be doing yourself a favor. Otherwise, just hope they don't move too quickly.
