With all the drywall down, we are left with 2x4 furring strips set flat against the wall that run over the concrete half-wall and up over the studs elevated over the studs by another perpendicular 2x4 to make the entire wall flush. They appeared to have created a sort of bottom plate, also set flat against the wall to serve as a nailing surface for the drywall at the base of the wall. This "assembly" is insulated with fiberglass insulation with foil backing. The top half of the wall is insulated between the framing studs with more fiberglass insulation with a paper backing.
Now, onto the problem. The furring strips seem to be set apart as much as 2.5 feet in some places and do not have nailing surfaces on one wall of each corner. The furring strip "assembly" also seems to be rocking away from the wall when we pull drywall nails. It just seems shoddy all around.
We have sort of decided to rip it all down to the bare concrete/studs and start over if there's no way to work with this assembly. If we rip it all down, how do I proceed from here? I'm looking at drylok for the walls and adding a vapor barrier to the studs. I have no idea how to attach new furring strips to the concrete. We decided to only add them to the concrete wall and leave a sort of shelf over the concrete half-wall when we re-rock the basement. Do we attach them with nails, screws, bolts and concrete patch or some sort of strong adhesive? Also, does there need to be insulation between the furring strips over the concrete wall?
