I would like to finish a room in my basement and make it a bedroom. I understand that an egress window is required by code for the room to be considered a bedroom. Are there other codes that would be required before the room could officially be considered a bedroom? One specific question I have is, can the electric service panel be in the bedroom? If so do I need to cover it with some kind of locked cabinet?

Brian...Seems like there is a code for everything. Electrical service panels are out of my league, however they are required at least 4' off the floor. I doubt your young children could reach that height, but with kids you never know.
