I have a detached garage built in the 50's that i am going to use as a workshop. It has a concrete floor 2x4 walls and I am insulating it with paper face insulation should I also put 6 mill plastic over top of that? (I hope so, i have already done 1/2 the garage!)I don't plan on drywall it. I live in Vermont and plan on heating it to 50-60deg with a monitor propane gas heater. also do you know if I should use a direct vent or ventless heater? I would like to use ventless due to cost and I am aware that it can cause condensation in the room I am just not sure how much it will affect me since it is not a living soace and I am not trying to heat to 70deg.

Also I don't plan on living here more than five years.

thanks, mark

I think everything is pretty good with your plan and construction methods with one exception. The polyethylene film is a good vapor barrier, and not a bad idea. It will also reduce infiltration of air. The problem is that its quite flammable and easily damaged. It would be better to cover it with drywall, or other cover, to provide some fire protection, prevent physical damage to the insulation by your work activities, hanging tools, or critters, and to make housekeeping easier. Also the plastic will break down with long-term exposure to air and light.

You will not find the unfinished walls easy to maintain, and drywall is really affordable. Since its a detached garage, it may not be a matter of code, but is a practical and inexpensive thing to do. You don't even have to tape it. If you install drywall, be sure to leave a 1/2 inch gap at the floor to avoid wicking moisture.

Condensation from a ventless system may be a bigger problem than you think. The problem is that the walls will be cold when you go to fire it up, and water vapor will condense on the walls and floor surfaces until everything heats up. If you go ventless, you might want to add a CO detector in the space.
