I am new here so forgive me if this has been discussed. I am trying to install a Werner Pull Down Attic Ladder. It requires the rough opening be 22.5" by 54". The space between my trusses is only 22". I called Werner to see if the steel frame can be modified to allow a narrower installation and it cannot. All avenues of help regarding cutting trusses, are saying the same thing, "no". I only need to "borrow" 0.25" from each side to complete the project. I have looked for other ladders that accomodate a narrower opening but have yet to find one. Any thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated.

it is possible depending on the truss construction. but you need to laminate ,using construction adhesive and screws, on the oppisite side of your cut. use three quarter inch plywood (1 or 2 layers) with the grain running horizonal for strength (on a 4 by 8 sheet ,from the top to the bottom,). you could even use a 2 by 4 or 2 by 6. about 3 to 4 feet in length.

as long as you are not removing the joint metal, then there is a little bit more to do with a larger gusset glued on the opposite side.

and some people will create a door on top of your ladder hole that is insulated for the hole you just cut out of your insulation.

Thank you for your insights. Looking at the project, I would have to remove all or part of the joint metal, which seems more of a chore than it is worth.

Side note, after gaining the access, the joists adjacent to the huge hole in my ceiling is at a 24" space. Funny I think.

In retrospect, though having a convenient pull down ladder, it doesn't allow safe access to both sides of the hole. Therefore, I will make a door that can be removed, and my Gorilla ladder will work just fine to access the entire opening.

Now, I just need to hone my yoga skills to crawl thru the trusses.
