We're in the beginning stages of a window replacement project for our 1920 bungalow. To evaluate the existing windows, I removed the casings around one window to reveal what struck me as a bit of an oddity.

There does not appear to be any rough framing around the window. It is a single hung with the old pulleys, so I realize there has to be a space open for the weights, but the window frame does not appear to be nailed into any framing. The nearest stud on either side of the frame is at least six inches away.

Is the window just resting on a cripple stud below and held in place by flashing on the exterior?

Any thoughts? Anyone point me in the direction of some diagrams of old window construction?
