My Lennox furnace is 23 years old and has a hammock style filter, can this be changed to a regular type furnace filter? Also, when the air conditioner comes on (Lennox 1998) there is a loud click prior to it coming on. Is that normal?

Thanks for your question.
If you have a return duct that only enters the end of the furnace, then yes you can install 1 filter, if you have more then one entry points of duct to the return end of the furnace then you will need one at each side. If you install return grills in your house you will then be able to install filters in the house and not have to deal with the furnace itself. However you will want to make sure the return duct is clean between the existing inside grill (s) and the furnace.
