I am a new homeowner and know very little, so I apologize if I'm not using the correct terminology. I have a 3/4" gap (max, it looks like it was kind of repaired in places)on the exterior of my house.

I'm unsure if my basement currently has a water issue, but it smells musty. I have not seen any water in the basement (lived in house 1.5 years). There are no opening windows in the basement, so no real way to clear out the smell (open to ideas here, too). I have a dehumidifier down there, and the house has a whole home dehumidifying system attached to the furnace.

I don't know how to seal the gap, or what to use, or how to do it. I've heard caulk. I've heard put a foam backer in first. I also saw spray foam, but the visual is unappealing.

I'm wondering what the best option is to seal this gap, and what product people recommend, and how to do it so it looks "clean".
