I know there is another thread on this topic already, but I didn't want to hijack that one for my questions, so here goes. I'm hoping the collective wisdom here can help me out. We have a large concrete patio area, 20 x 36, that the wife is wanting a pergola over. I've built several pergola's over the years, which have all come out well, but this will be the largest by far.

The current thoughts are to use 8 x 8 red cedar posts, with approximately 12 foot spacing (R to L), and 4 x 8 or 4 x 10 beams. I want to go large for the appearance factor.

To determine the dimension needs on the beams, I have to figure the dimensions of the rafters. This is my main question, as the rafters will have to span about 18 feet from center of one beam to center of the other, with about a 1.5 foot overhang on one end.

We will likely be using 2 x 6 purloins over the top of the rafters. So my questions are:

1) Will any dimension of cedar span 18 feet with the purloins I have planned?

2) If the answer to #1 is yes, how will that rafter size impact my needs on the beam dimensions? Thank you all for any help.
