Real butcherblock counters are readily available and relatively inexpensive and easy to work with. They oftne come unfinished or with a lacquer finish that will eventually wear and need to be sanded and refinished with either scent-free mineral oil or new lacquer or polyurethane. I prefer the oil finish. I have installed these and not found the maintenance to be too bad. Remember, these are hardwood counters laminated in strips with the edge grain exposed, and are very durable compared to wood planks. Laminate flooring and wood floor material are not intended for use as counters, unable to deal with moisture or heat and should not be used.
