Air Admittance Valves
We have just moved into a new home. When there is a heavy rainfall there is a sewer smell in the kitchen. I discovered the kitchen sink had an AAV that was the source of the smell. I taped a plastic bag over it and called the builder who sent the plumber. He said it must have been defective and replaced it. Now it's raining again and the smell is back. I have researched these AAV's to see what they are (since they are not used in my former State but are Code here). All the pictures of them installed show them just after the trap on the drain pipe. However, my drain pipe goes into the wall & the AAV is installed on a separate pipe going into the wall. Is mine installed in the wrong place for it to work right, or is the fact that it only smells during a heavy rain indicative of some other problem, or did I just get another defective one? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
