I have a stain from a bath tub mat that is hard to remove and keep from returning. What can I use to get rid of it?

Dear Parisan,
Is your tub fiberglass or enameled cast iron/steel? Methods for stain removal vary. Let me know as I've dealt with this problem alot in my business.

What I used for awhile: Automovive rubbing and poishing compounds. First use the rubbing compound to remove the stain. Flush with water and use the polishing compound to polish the area to it's original gloss. Do not use the same cloths. The reason I think the stain comes back is the pores of the finish are open. Polishing the area should stop this. I've use these compounds on countertops, tile, etc.
Good Luck,

Hey iceman, have you tried that stuff on marble? I'd like to know if it works. I've got a spot on my marble fireplace that was "damaged" by - get this- ketchup. I believe it was the vinegar in the ketchup that did it. Anyhow, your idea sounds like a possible fix.

I've used the compounds on stained marble countertops with good success, however, on a few instances, I've had to use a sealer afterwards. The jobs turned out like new.
