After flushing toilet, while tank is filling up, there is a "rumbling" noise coming from the vent pipes, I think. My plumbing is all original, cast iron and steel, new in about 1965 or so. I have 2 "high" water usage, came with the house, toilets on main floor of house, and 1 newer, high water usage toilet in basement of house.

I have tried getting up on snow covered roof and shining a flashlight down main vent stack, as well as all of the stacks. I couldn't see all the way to bottom of any of the stacks, so I tried dropping a small snowball down each one. That, of course, told me absolutely nothing, but it seemed like a good idea at the time in order to check for blockage.

I can't drag a hose on the roof to put water down the vents right now, cause the roof is like I said, covered with snow, so I am at a loss at what else to try. I don't know if the vents are blocked, causing the rumbling noise or if it is something else. Is this noise ,although unusual, something to really worry about, or should I wait for spring and the snow to melt?

I hope I have provided enough information to get some help with this.

Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.

the noise is coming from the ballcock also known as the fill valve.

replace it and the noise will go away.

Thank you for your help. I have seen the vapor coming out of all of the vent pipes. I just assumed they could be "blocked" enough to cause a noise, but still allow some air to escape. Now I know. The main stack appears to be 4" dia. and barely 2' tall.

It is a huge relief to know that I don't have to unthaw my hose and drag it up on the roof, especially since it is snowing again right now!

Thank you for giving me a "simple" fix for the somewhat startling and annoying rumble that flushing the toilet creates. I am going to give that a try.
