My home built in 1960 2500sq ft. has this system where the air goes through the crawlspace then into the home through the wall registers. There is NO ductwork! how safe is this as far as breathing air goes? It also seems to have a funny smell that permiates the home. Haven't moved in yet no carpet, still fixing up. Central California

What is the source of heat and air conditioning (gas, electric, etc.) , and where are the unit(s) located? Is there a return vent inside the house? Is the crawl space airtight, or does air come in freely from outside? Is there a fan and where is it?

unit is in a room in the garage, return vent in house, gas carrier unit. Crawl space is air tight so I'm told, don't know of a fan unless it's in the garage room. Thank you

Depending on what's in your crawlspace, you could be breathing molds, etc. from the soil. Besides, you're heating and cooling the soil under the crawlspace. I doubt the air conditioning is working as well as it could because the cool air tends to settle to the ground. I strong urge you to add ductwork and returns. These should make the system more effective. You probably will have to add a larger fan to push air through the ducts and pull it back. While you're at it, insulating the floor above and the ductwork itself would be a good idea.

I'm with david_wv on that one.
You should find out what is, and what is not in your crawl space before going any further. Does it have an uncovered dirt floor? Is it damp? Is the floor of the house insulated and, if so, what is the condition of the insulation? Besides possible mold, could the smell be caused by a dead animal in the crawl space? Something else?

Thank you both for your replys my crawspace is cemented, the floors are not insulated and I'm told by a HVAC co it looks sealed and clean in the crawlspace. My husband and I were surprised to find this kind of system in California or anywhere for that matter. Why were these types sold? Unsuspecting buyers? We never heard of this before we bought the home, my concern is the air that is circulating in the house, molds etc.being harmful to our health. We're with you guys on this will have ductwork ran should we still insulate the floors? Thanks again
