Hi,

My wife and I are buying a new house which will be completed in Feb 2004. One of the options that the builder is offering is a central humdifier system.

The house will be in central NJ and used forced air heating. My wife has heard from friends that a humidifier lowers overall heating and cooling costs. The cost of the humdifier is minimal (approx $600) so it seems like a good investment if we can save in the long run. We will also be getting wood floors on the first floor -- I've heard that a humidifier can also warp the wood.

My concern is that the humidifier will spray water into the duct system and could potentially cause mold overgrowth. It will be difficult if not impossible to get out of the ducts later -- is this a valid concern?

If installed correctly, and is sized properly for the house, the answers are all no. It will keep the wood floors from shrinking, improve health during winter months, and help it feel warmer as well. The hardest part about a humidifier is setting the humidistat.

The one type of humidifier to stay away from are the ones that spray a fine mist into the air stream. They will cause problems down the line. You will want the type that has either a wheel with media running in a pan of water, or the pad type that water is poured through when the furnace is running, both types are connected to the plenum and return air duct and recirculate the warm moistened air back through the heat exchanger so it evaporates and gets sent through the house properly.
