If I install a ceiling fan where the ends of the blades will extend over - or nearly over - the ceiling a/c vent. Is this a good idea? a bad idea? or will it make no difference? It will be a standard installation (not flush mounted)

I would say it wouldn't make much of a difference. The blower in your furnace dictates the air flow through your ducts, so a ceiling fan would probably do nothing but distrubute the cold/warm air a bit more quickly. In my opinion, the only place this may have a direct effect on the heating/cooling of your home is if you install this fan in the same room as your thermostat. The thermostat tells the furnace/air conditioner what temperature the "whole house" is and when to come on. If you call for heat and the ceiling fan blows that warm air down to satisfy the thermsotat too quickly, the house will never really reach the temperature you are asking.

I would be interested to see what others post about this - interesting question!
