I have an odd situation. I've ripped out the finished basement from the previous owner and have installed new studded walls with drywall. Before I purchased the house, the owner mentioned that one spot in the basement would get wet during a heavy rain, but he wasn't sure why. After I ripped out the walls, I found the remains of a fireplace installed in the basement walls (don't ask me why). The aluminum flue and ash pit cleanout door was installed right through the concrete block foundation. I don't seem to have an issue with the flue, but the access door about 1-1/2' below the flue seems to let water in. Over the summer, we had a horrible downpour for about 3 hours, and a puddle of water about 4' in diameter ended up on the basement floor. At first, I did not know if the water was coming in through the brick or through the ash pit cleanout door. I set up a make shift test before the next rain and determined the water was getting in the chimney and coming in through the cleanout door. It only comes in during extremely bad (and continious) rain storms.
My question is, do I seal the chimney at the top, and if so, with what? Or, do I completely seal the access door? I already have a rain cap on, but it sits high and I think it is still letting rain in. I was contemplating filling the access door with cement to seal it from the water in case ground water was coming in, not just through the top of the chimney. I've had water no where else in my basement since I've moved in 3 years ago. I just need to figure out a way to either seal the chimney or seal the access door. Please help, this is slowing my progression on the basement...new baby on the way!
