I have a GHR26 from 97 that has, for years, had a consistent fail to start problem that always comes down to either of two things:

1. the spark ignitor (either bad, or gap too wide)

2. the ignition wire connection at the board, which has now been snipped too many times to use that trick (a couple times snipping the end of the wire and reattaching fixed my problem), now the wire is out of length, but has a recent snip

last time the furnace wasn't working consistently i put in a new ignitor and went back out of town (I live 1500 miles away). my friend who is staying in my house reported intermittent furnace and i called repair guys, who told me i needed a new thermostat (I didn't), and he regapped the ignitor (said it was too wide), which fixed the problem

this was 2 months ago, now it is behaving the same way.

it sounds like it is trying to start but fails, then the watchguard kicks in. eventually after a few cycles, it will light and run fine for awhile

i'm tired of paying repair guys every two months, when problem keeps reoccuring

any ideas??

could it be flame sensor? can the gap change that quickly? any ideas??

I'll have to see what happens, it'll be some time before I'm back in town, I may have to call a service tech in, in which case, i'll be sure to tell them to check for bad grounds, etc...
