I just had the phone company install a phone line to my new house. Nowadays, supposedly the phone company is only responsible for hooking up one phone. Therefore, I hooked up the other jacks matching the same wires together as the technician did.

Here is the problem, we have one of those old style phones with the old style ring, when I pick up any phone in the house the old style phone dings. I have switched phones around in the house, but that phone will ding any time another receiver is picked up. I thought that it was perhaps the phone, but I have tried the exact phone in other homes and the "extra ding" does not occur. I have tried changing wires around a bit, but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas besides getting rid of the phone???

I have a phone that does this too.

Check the polarity of the active pair of wires....reversing them might help (Green to red terminal, red to green terminal). The phone may have been reverse-wired inside.

Actually I think it's a cool thing because it lets other people within the vicinity of that phone know that someone is about to make a call (so they don't go and pick it up and start dialing by mistake).

I have very old(1935) phone that does the same thing. As other phones are dialed (pulse dialing) you can here ding ding on the old phone. It also randomly will ding for no aparrent reason. Inside the phone are instruction that said try reversing the wires to eliminate the dings. It didn't work so I just put up with it.
