The house Im about to move into has textured wood panels, instead of wallboard. Its like a pressed wood, that looks like tree bark. Are there any drawbacks to getting it smoothed out like they do with drywall?
Thanks

Are the panels painted or raw?

Its painted. It was an original brown color, I guess that was natural, but the previous owners painted it white.

If the panels are painted with a flat paint I would think that you could do a skim coat or two of Durabond 90 to get the wall fairly smooth and then do the final coat of regular drywall mud.

If the walls are not painted with flat paint then prime with Zinsser 123 before you skim them.

After you have gotten the walls smooth you will need to prime them with a latex drywall primer before you apply a finsih paint.
