cedar siding

We have just finalised an offer on a house wich has huge amounts of cedar siding all around the house. The house was recently redone (6 months)and looks beautiful.Since our purchase, I have heard horror stories about the upkeep on this type of siding, and now I am wondering if all my summers are going to be taken up with maintaining the house, or even worse, spending a small fortune on having it done by a professionnal.
From what I gather, the house wich has a penetrating type stain, needs to be restained every 2 years or so, and that the whole house needs to be sanded and redone every 7-8 years.Should I be having nightmares about this, or is there better types of products available or techniques that might increase the lenght of this cycle.

Who stained your siding?What is the exact name of the product they used?
1 last thing go look at my home page,this way you know what im talking about.
Some stained cedar sided houses if done correctly and used even a half way decent stain should last at least 4-7 years.Most will last 7-10 with only your occasional washing.
I wish I lived next to you i'd take care of it for you and the price would be really reasonable and the quality would be there for you to enjoy with no hassel's or nightmares.

Can you send me some pics of various angles and a full shot of the home?
I could kind of give you a idea what I would give for a bid,this way you know what to go by,if you give me just square footage it doesn't do any good,alot has to do with ease of access height of place, angles,how many windows to be taped off,trees in the way,driveway to be covered.

A penetrating stain on cedar does not require a whole lot of maintenance other than washing every year to remove dirt and mildew. This type of stain does not peel like a soild stain so i am not sure why someone would tell you that you would need to sand it every so moany years.

Ret is right on the amount of time this type of finish will last.
