just moved into new house (built 1899)and tried to paint the bedroom walls with a fresh coat of matt white emulsion. Although I had noticed a bit of cracking on the original emulsion it has now gone crazy. It looks like thousands of tiny hairline cracks, like a crackle glaze paint effect. Is there any primer, type of paint that would cover it as give me a smooth finish.

go to your local paint store and ask them if shilacke will work in this case...it dries like a glue on the wall and seals everything under it..

Although, the best way to remedy your problem is to open up all the cracks, scrape the old loose paint off and spackle and repaint..

Good luck
