I have a huge problem. My house was built in 1978 and I have hardwood floors underneath, however there is two layers of carpet on top of beautiful oak floors. I am told the first layer of carpet and padding was placed down in 1978 with glue and some type of spongy like padding which is now stuck to the wood. If anyone has any suggestions on how to remove it I would really appreciate it. This is a total nightmare. Should I just replace the carpet and call it quits. Help in Alabama.

it depends how much your willing to spend, what i would do is try to pull up the carpets ,i would think the top one is streached in? if so then no problem, the bottom one may be glued to the floor, does it have an attached pad?if its glued down, its scrape, scrape ,scrape...you do it or pay an installer $40.00 per hr to do it.when you get it all clean, you can then get a price to refinish the floor .or recarpet..good luck
