Hello. We live in a 1.5 story townhouse and would like to replace the floors on the bottom floor. The downstairs is about 700 sq ft and is currently covered in wood laminate in living area and vinyl in the bathroom and kitchen. We'd like to have real wood in the living room, tile in the bathroom, kitchen and dining room and some low pile carpet (we have 3 cats) in the downstairs bedroom.
Questions: What kind of difference will there be in the areas between the tile and the hardwood and carpet? The tile will require a 1/2 cement backerboard. Also, since we will be tiling in the kitchen, the brings up kitchen cabinets. Eventually, we'd like to replace the cabinets (small kitchen, but still expensive, I'm sure), should we wait and budget for that too and do it all at once? Or are cabinets generally a standard size and could fit where the old ones did without breaking any of the tile in installation. Any tips on which wood to use, tile size, carpet recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.
