Discussing the Landscape Design and Living Amenities

Project: Vermont Farmhouse, Episode 13, Part 1

Bob takes us on a final tour of the completed farmhouse project in Quechee, VT. First, Bob walks around the exterior, looking at the finished landscape and hardscape design. Inside, he reviews the connected home features, as well as the final interior design. Highlights include the handmade furniture and custom Plantation-style interior window shutters.
Part 1: Discussing the Landscape Design and Living Amenities
Bob talks with landscape architect David Raphael of Landworks about his approach to designing the grounds surrounding the Vermont farmhouse.

David's objective was to work within the context of the existing environment. Landscaping falls primarily around two sides of the house, with a small amount of lawn area and some native ground covers.

Ferns and other planting won't be going in until spring but, for now, some native and ornamental perennials have been planted to provide seasonal color. Plant material includes rudbeckia and foxglove.

The strongest features of the landscape design are the two Corinthian granite walls that retain the hillside. By incorporating indigenous material like native birch and maple, David reintroduced some of the woods that were cleared for construction.

Along the small, informal bluestone terrace are spirea bumalda and gold flame spirea, which should bloom from early summer through the fall.

Ted Riley tells Bob about some of the additional amenities that come along with the house. Quechee Lakes Development provides a complete management service, which can handle everything from housecleaning to security and an automatic membership at the Quechee Lakes Country Club which offers skiing, two 18-hole golf courses, tennis courts, and other indoor facilities.
Part 2: Vermont-Style Interior Decorating
Part 3: Reviewing Satellite Dish Features and the Master Bedroom
The wooded New England setting, with quaint towns and covered bridges, provides the perfect backdrop for building a traditional Vermont-style farmhouse.

Bob works with the Quechee Lakes Development Company to build a residence that hearkens back to the past yet satisfies the needs of a family in the new millennium.
