Keeping your garden hydrated is a demanding task, but installing a drip irrigation system makes it easy to ensure your plants never go thirsty. Drip irrigation is easy to install and maintain, and takes the guesswork out of [lawn care](<https://www.bobvila.com/category/lawn-care/>) by preventing both under- and overwatering. We researched more than 20 highly rated drip irrigation kits and tested nine of them as we sought out the top option for home gardeners.

To bolster our knowledge, we interviewed Todd Hendricks, founder of [Louisville Landscape Pros](<https://www.louisvillelandscapepros.com/>) in Louisville, Kentucky. “Drip irrigation systems are the most water-efficient irrigation system on the market and can reduce your water bills significantly, sometimes even up to 30 percent,” he says.

After 2 months of hands-on testing in our own gardens, our top choice was the [Rain Bird Landscape and Garden Drip Watering Kit](<https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QNM7575?tag=best-drip-irrigation-system-20&th=1>). ## Our Top Picks

Whether you have raised beds, hanging baskets, or in-ground gardens, there is a garden watering system on this list to help you care for it.

Every garden is unique, and the Rain Bird Lnddripkit landscape and garden drip irrigation system offers endless adaptability to fit any garden. Whether you garden in the ground, in containers, in hanging baskets, or all three, this system is up to the task. It includes three different types of watering devices, with pressure-compensating technology to ensure every plant receives a precise amount of water.

The Rain Bird drip irrigation system includes a head assembly, a 50-foot roll of half-inch main line tubing with friction-fit fixtures, 50 feet of quarter-inch microtubing with barbed fixtures, 10 each of 1-gallon and 2-gallon drippers, four adjustable micro [sprinkler heads](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-sprinkler-heads/>), two adjustable micro bubblers, and an installation tool. It came with everything we needed to water a small garden of up to 22 plants.

The price was competitive, and setup was a breeze. It took less than 30 minutes, using 17 drippers in our mixed garden of blueberries, grapes, and container-grown herbs. It came with good, not great, instructions that helped us design a plan for our space. The half-inch supply hose was a bit stiff to roll out, but the included 6-inch landscape staples easily held it in place. Once assembled, it worked perfectly without leaking.

**What our tester says:** “The Rain Bird landscape drip irrigation kit came with a nice variety of emitters and plenty of tubing to cover our test garden, which included an in-ground planting, a raised bed, and four containers. It also had the best variety of emitters and the quality was top tier.”—Mark Wolfe, Product Reviews tester and writer

You don’t need to spend a fortune on mechanized assistance to keep your favorite plants alive. The Raindrip automatic drip irrigation system is just the right size to water a porch or patio plant collection and it won’t break the bank.

Assembling this kit was a straightforward process of connecting sections of tubing from pot to pot, and attaching one or two emitters for every pot using barbed connectors. We had our 17-plant configuration up and running in about 15 minutes. The mechanical watering timer allowed us to choose from menus of pre-set watering durations and frequencies to best fit our plants’ needs, and included a manual setting for supplemental watering outside the regular schedule.

This is a dependable and affordable drip irrigation system with timer technology for containers and hanging baskets, but it does have a few quirks. For example, since all of the emitters are fixed at the same flow rate, the only way to give a plant more or less water than its neighbors is by placing a different number of emitters in that pot. Also, the system is not expandable beyond the 20 included emitters and 75 feet of tubing because of pressure drop-off.

Hanging baskets add considerable beauty, but they can be a hassle to water with a [watering can](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-watering-can/>) or wand. This automatic drip irrigation watering kit from Orbit eliminates the hassle, leaving you time to sit back and enjoy them. The kit comes with six adjustable nozzles, 30 feet of quarter-inch tubing, a 25 PSI water pressure regulator, and an automatic watering timer that turns the system on and off according to your settings. It also includes clips to pin the tubing in place directly over the hanging baskets.

Perhaps the best part of this dripping irrigation kit is the “Flex-Mist” flexible nozzle tubing that holds its position, creating pinpoint accuracy and minimizing water waste. With mist nozzles, proper positioning is necessary to combat wind drift, and these were some of the easiest to adjust. The combination of easy nozzle positioning and independently adjustable flow rates allowed us to “personalize” the setup for the unique needs of individual baskets.

While this system works very well for hanging baskets, it would be difficult to retrofit for other uses. The clips won’t keep hoses in place in a flower bed, likely leaving the nozzles in the dirt.

Watering an entire landscape could be costly and wasteful, but Orbit offers a solution to get the job done efficiently with its shrub and flower bed drip kit. This kit includes eight adjustable bubblers and all the necessary hoses and fittings to conserve water while keeping your shrubs and flower beds properly hydrated.

Although it doesn’t come with an assortment of emitters like our top overall pick, this system was easier to set up because of its adjustability. The kit covers up to 250 square feet with just eight [watering wand](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-watering-wand/>)-like bubblers, so placement is key. Thankfully it comes with a good set of instructions to help plan the best layout. In our tests we easily adjusted the bubblers as needed to cover landscape beds of different sizes and shapes, or the extensive root zone of a large shade tree.

Unlike drippers, the micro bubblers produce an adjustable umbrella-shaped “fountain” pattern that covers more space. Each one can put out as much as 29 GPH, instead of a dripper’s 0.5 to 2.0 GPH. For that reason, this kit is best suited to densely planted flower beds and shrub borders.

**What our tester says:** “Orbit’s adjustable bubblers were easy to use and covered a lot of ground, which helped to make setup a breeze.”—Mark Wolfe, Product Reviews tester and writer

Setting up drip irrigation for raised beds is not radically different from in-ground gardens, but the Vego Garden Irrigation Kit offers a clean appearance and more precise flow control than other options. This kit was designed for use with [Vego Garden’s corrugated metal raised bed kits](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/vego-garden-raised-bed-review/>), but can easily be modified for use with other raised bed brands and types. The kit features durable metal nozzles with adjustable sprayers, manual shutoff valves to control each nozzle independently, and all of the necessary plumbing and fixtures to cover a raised bed (large or small, according to Vego Garden sizing).

The first thing that stood out to us was the sturdy construction of the components. Unlike other kits, this one feels like it is designed to last many seasons. Not only that, but it is designed as a “built-in” system that integrates seamlessly with the garden bed for a clean, tidy appearance. The plumbing mounts onto the rim of the bed and the water supply line gets hidden inside the bed wall. That being said, it’s easiest to install during the initial bed setup. Retrofitting this system onto a bed that is already built and filled with soil takes some extra time and labor.

Another unconventional thing about this kit is that it uses full domestic water pressure, up to 80 PSI. That allows users to daisy-chain up to four large raised beds on the same water line without sacrificing performance. The downside is that it takes more time to calibrate each head for even coverage across the whole system, but once it’s done, this system is super dependable.

When you choose a drip irrigation system for your container garden, don’t set yourself up for disappointment. The Drip Depot irrigation kit for container gardens answers the call. Not only are there four different size options to choose from, but the company makes it easy to customize any kit to meet the needs of your space and your plants.

We tested the Premium Kit, which includes 150 feet (combined) of half-inch and quarter-inch tubing, barbed fittings, 10 adjustable bubbler stakes, and 70 emitters (0.5 GPH), which is enough to water up to 70 containers. For that many pots, it is also helpful that the kit includes half-inch and quarter-inch tubing clips to keep all of the water lines neat and tidy.

Before ordering this kit, be aware that it is not a “retail ready” kit. It arrives as a box of components, conveniently counted and packed by type in cellophane, straight out of bulk bins. There is not much in the way of labeling and no instructions. Those with no experience could be overwhelmed at first, but the Drip Depot website offers resources that cut through the confusion. It’s worth the extra effort for the cost savings, and the quality is top-notch.

Soaker hoses operate differently from drip irrigation systems, but they fulfill a similar role in watering efficiency and cost savings. For temporary applications, or gardens that change frequently (like vegetable gardens), this could be the most affordable and convenient choice. We’ve included this selection from our tested guide to the [best soaker hoses](<https://www.bobvila.com/reviews/best-soaker-hoses/>).

The Secbulk 200-foot interlinkable soaker hose includes four 50-foot sections that easily fit together for watering large lawns, gardens, or flowerbeds. Made of clog-resistant fabric wrapped over a vinyl hose, this dripping hose irrigation system can be installed above ground or buried under up to 3 inches of mulch or soil.

The hose was soft to the touch, lightweight, and super flexible. When we turned our spigot on, the hose “sweated” uniform drops of water, slowly delivering moisture within a 4-inch band on either side of the hose. The kit includes four 50-foot hoses with end caps and garden staples to keep them in place. The hoses can be connected for a full 200-foot run, or used separately in different garden zones.

## What to Consider When Choosing a Drip Irrigation System

To choose or design the best drip system for garden plants, you should first consider your garden size and layout, the various emitter options, your water source, and other relevant factors.

### Garden Size and Layout

The size and layout of the garden provides the first indication of what you will need. A drip irrigation kit that is suitable for a large in-ground vegetable garden will be quite different from the one that a small container garden on the patio requires. Not only does a larger garden require more and possibly larger diameter tubing to supply the water, but it also will need more and different types of emitters based on plant size, spacing, and water usage.

Safety and aesthetics are important to consider at this point. Foot traffic in in-ground garden beds is predictable, making it easy to route water lines out of pathways and under mulch, minimizing both visual impact and tripping hazards. Hose routing is a much greater concern around hanging baskets, containers, and raised beds. Drip irrigation kits for above-ground gardens should include tubing clips, hangers, or other hardware to organize the water lines.

### Types of Drip Irrigation Systems

Like [lawn watering](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/watering-the-lawn/>) systems, drip irrigation is meant to control water usage while keeping garden plants hydrated and healthy. Matching the equipment to the garden’s water requirements is a must. This section explores the diversity of components in different drip watering kits and the best use cases for them.

#### Point Source Emitters and Tubing

Most drip kits feature punch-in tubing and pressure-compensating emitters. This setup is very convenient because it allows the user to install drip emitters precisely over a target plant’s root zone with a high degree of adaptability. Emitters can be installed at any spacing, either directly into half-inch mainline tubing or up to 30 feet away from the mainline by means of a quarter-inch lateral drip line.

Most of these kits include some combination of 0.5, 1.0, and/or 2.0 gallons-per-hour (GPH) emitters. Water output is managed two ways: emitter selection and water timing. These systems are easy to manage when all of the plants on a given watering zone have similar water requirements. It becomes more complicated when different plant types and sizes are on the same irrigation zone.

#### Adjustable Emitters

Adjustable emitters, including micro [sprinklers](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-lawn-sprinkler/>)/misters and bubblers, attach to half-inch mainline by means of quarter-inch drip tubing. Unlike pressure-compensating drippers, adjustable emitters feature a twisting cap/valve to manually adjust the spray pattern or change the flow rate. These devices can deliver up to 20 gph or more, and water a much larger area than pressure-compensating emitters.

Some of the most popular use cases for adjustable emitters include container gardening, hanging baskets, and flower beds. They make it easy to increase output as plants grow, and the broad, gentle spray pattern moistens soil in fast-drying containers more effectively than a single drip.

#### Dripline

An option that is less commonly available in kits, drip line irrigation is half-inch poly tubing with pressure-compensating drip holes built in. Dripline works most efficiently in gardens where plants are evenly spaced in straight rows, as in vegetable gardens and some ornamental beds. It can also be used to create a circular drip irrigation system for trees or shrubs.

Setting up dripline is super easy, but it lacks adaptability. It is more precise and durable than soaker hose, however, which makes it an excellent option for landscape installation.

#### Drip Tape

Drip tape is very similar to dripline, but lightweight and much less durable. It is primarily used in agricultural applications, where it is only used for a season or two before being replaced. As such, it is not practical for residential use. Alternatively, choose soaker hoses for temporary or repeat seasonal use; or dripline for long-term, year-round applications.

#### Soaker Hose

Soaker hose is radically different from other drip irrigation options. A soaker hose is a porous hose that, when pressurized, weeps water along its full length. The best quality soaker hoses are made of thick recycled rubber because it is durable, and resistant to both kinking and cracking. Others are made of premium food-grade polyurethane or lightweight vinyl with a fabric sleeve.

Soaker hose is affordable, easy to set up, and moistens the ground all along its length. It is most effective when laid out in long straight rows. It is not very effective when it comes to watering expansive gardens.

### Water Pressure and Flow Rate

A low-pressure drip irrigation system makes deep watering easy without waste. Many of these systems include a pressure regulator that attaches directly to the water supply. This device reduces pressure coming into the system from an average of 60 pounds per square inch (PSI) to about 20 PSI. Having this component in place and operational allows the rest of the system to function properly.

With the pressure now reduced, the flow rate is controlled by the emitters. Fixed rate emitters are calibrated to allow a precise amount of water through. You will find an embossed GPH rating on the body of the emitter. When working with fixed emitters, install one or more at the base of each plant based on the plant’s size and water needs.

### Filtration

Do not overlook or skip this part. A screen filter installed at the beginning of the system prevents particles and sediment from clogging the emitters. If your kit does not include one, it’s worth the small extra expense to add one. Clean the filter every month or two to keep the system working its best for years to come.

### Automation and Timing

Many kits include some sort of [timer](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-hose-timer/>), although others do not. Depending on the scale of the system, automation may be a convenience or an essential. Without a timer, you will have to turn the water on and off manually for each watering. A basic manual timer can help to prevent overwatering by turning off the water at the end of a watering cycle. A more advanced setup will turn the water on and off on schedule throughout a weekly cycle.
