Admittedly, the variety of colors it comes in is another of my things about this fan, as is the fact that the grill and blades are easy to remove for cleaning. We spent a couple of weeks traveling across Europe last summer, and everywhere we went, everyone had small personal fans like the Blueair AlwaysCool. After testing it during record-breaking temperatures back in the US this year, we can see why. As a lightweight (about 9 ounces) and quiet (23 to 46 decibels) handheld fan, it offers speeds between 0 and 100 (depending on whether you need a soft breeze or a direct draft) at a sound that won’t bother anyone around you. When selecting the fans we wanted to test, we researched more than 25 models, carefully analyzing noise level, design, adjustability, power, and portability. We tested a variety of tabletop, tower, pedestal, and ceiling fans to suit many typical household needs. We assembled each fan (when necessary) and noted its noise level. Many of these models stayed between about 25 and 50 decibels across their settings, with anything under 30 decibels being like a whisper. Even the quietest fans get a little louder at higher speeds, because even if the motor makes less noise, the blades generate more sound the faster they cut through the air. We tried out each fan’s features and perks—various speed levels, remote controls, programmable settings, smart options, and adjustable stands (if applicable). We even tested a fan that emits a mist for outdoor use on sweltering days. Then, we awarded points based on a rubric: The better a fan performed on a test, the more points we gave it.
